Let’s work together.
The Vhembe's greatest wealth lies not beneath the ground, but above it — in its living landscape, its biodiversity, its water, and its people…
Volunteer for a Living Limpopo
We are a small, high-impact civil society organisation fighting to protect one of Southern Africa's most extraordinary living landscapes from coal and heavy industry — and to replace a failing fossil-fuel development model with a nature-positive, bioeconomy-driven future for the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve.
We run on passion, expertise, and the generosity of people who believe the cause is worth their time. We'd love yours.
Who we are
Living Limpopo is a non-profit policy advocacy organisation established in 2019 and based in South Africa's Limpopo Province. We deploy law, science, strategic communications, and finance to challenge the Musina–Makhado Special Economic Zone (MMSEZ) — a coal-and-steel mega-project that threatens to irrevocably transform the Vhembe into a sacrifice zone — and to advance a compelling alternative: the Great Vhembe Conservation Area and a Special Environmental Economic Zone anchored by biodiversity, not coal.
Our work spans strategic litigation, environmental impact research, policy advocacy, media campaigns, and coalition-building. We are a lean team, which means every skilled volunteer makes a meaningful difference.
How our volunteers contribute
We welcome volunteers with skills and interests across all areas of our work. You don't need to be in Limpopo — much of what we do can be done remotely. Areas where volunteers currently contribute include:
-
— supporting our strategic litigation and administrative law work
-
— conservation ecology, agro ecology, biodiversity, water, climate, land management and spatial planning, and environmental economics
-
— briefing notes, policy submissions, and position papers
-
— content writing, social media, press releases, and storytelling
-
— infographics, reports, and campaign materials
-
— identifying funding opportunities and drafting proposals
-
— project and programme management, bookkeeping, reporting, and organisational support
-
— community liaison, partner outreach, and campaign mobilisation
What volunteering involves
Volunteering with Living Limpopo is flexible. We work with volunteers on a project basis — from a few hours on a specific task to ongoing involvement in a campaign workstream. We will always agree on scope and time commitment upfront, so you can give what you can.
All volunteer contributions are unremunerated. Living Limpopo is a registered Non-Profit Company (NPC Registration No. 2022/583794/08, NPO Certificate No. 298-410).
